Description: This book covers all aspects of surgery in the abdominal cavity. The structure is unique in that it uses two distinct organizational approaches - a specific organ-system approach with chapters devoted to a problem-based approach. This edition is a significant update from the 2013 edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive surgical discussion of pathology found in the abdomen. This book fills a niche in the cohort of classic surgical textbooks with its focus solely on diseases of the abdomen. Further, the problem-based approach means that a chapter on vascular emergencies is followed by esophageal motility disorders. The authors have done an excellent job of meeting the objective.
Audience: The audience is surgical trainees as well as practicing surgeons. The chapters are valuable both for the background and work-up discussions as well as the essential operative tenets to complete a procedure. The authors are all experts in their fields and include surgery department chairs and presidents of major international surgery societies.
Features: The book is broken down into distinct sections based on major organ systems — i.e. esophagus, colon and rectum, and abdominal wall. Within each section are problem-focused reviews of a variety of pathologies. Each chapter does a nice job of summarizing the relevant pathophysiology prior to discussing operative approaches and outcomes. The shortcoming of this book lies in the niche that it fills. Increasingly, readers are eschewing large classic textbooks for smaller, more focused works. This should not be considered a weakness of this book, but rather a recognition that reader preferences are subject to change.
Assessment: This is an excellent book. It is thorough, well organized, and has excellent illustrations. It fills a specific niche by focusing only on the diversity of pathology that can be found in the abdomen. It is nice update of the previous edition.
