Overview

It's 1965 in New Orleans and eight year old Nicky can't wait for summer because that's when he stays with his Maw-maw and he gets to help her out in her restaurant. He especially loves when they shop for all the ingredients needed to prepare all the delicious food!

Maw-Maw Lillian calls it "Makin' Groceries."

Makin' Groceries is an old South Louisiana expression that is traditionally used for food shopping. It derives for the French faire son marche, "to do one's market shopping." Faire translates to either "to do" or "to make." Some folks, for reasons of nostalgia, the author included, still use this wonderful expression with great pride!
