Description: This is a well-designed, efficient book that guides its readers through common history, evidence- based physical examination techniques, and diagnostic imaging findings to help them make confident diagnoses of a myriad of musculoskeletal problems from finger to toe. The accompanying ebook offering provides selected video examples of various clinical pearls and physical examination pearls. I must admit I was a bit disappointed that all examination techniques were not available on the electronic version.
Purpose: The goal was to create a standalone reference for a broad range of clinicians who need a quick refresher on the particulars of an examination that they may not routinely perform. Ultimately, the purpose is to positively impact quality patient care by assuring that clinicians can make the proper diagnosis. These are worthy goals and enhanced particularly by the select video offerings on the website.
Audience: The broad audience includes all clinicians, from medical students, technicians, physician assistants, and residents to the most senior orthopedic surgeons who simply want to optimize their craft. The authors have done an admirable job accomplishing this goal. Indeed, Dr. Mark Miller is internationally regarded as one of the leading educators in orthopedics and has authored over 40 textbooks.
Features: Each anatomically targeted section begins with an overview of the common histories provided by patients for a specific injury followed by the physical examination pearls (with pictures and diagrams) that guide clinicians to the proper diagnosis. When possible, each examination pearl is accompanied by some evidence for its accuracy. Finally, each anatomic diagnosis is followed by common imaging or testing findings including radiographs, MRIs, EMG, or arthroscopic findings as appropriate. Examination images and drawings are high quality and assist in demonstrating the techniques to readers.
Assessment: Ultimately, this is yet another great offering from Dr. Mark Miller and his colleagues that does its intended job of educating readers, in this case on how to make an accurate diagnosis in orthopedics.
