Description: This is the second edition of a clinical management guide edited by an internationally recognized leader in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. This is an excellent and useful guide for urologists with a casual or intense interest in erectile dysfunction.
Purpose: As stated in the foreword by the editor, since the publication of the first edition there have been dramatic changes in the treatment of sexual dysfunction, including the release of two oral therapies, two new PD5 inhibitors, an emerging paradigm relationship between lower urinary tract symptoms and ED, and a provocative concept of ED being the sentinel symptom of underlying cardiovascular disease. Additionally, female sexual dysfunction has emerged as a bona fide research area. These emerging concepts are well presented in this book, along with more classic presentations of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and certain types of treatments (vacuum devices, ejection therapy, etc.).
Audience: This is an excellent book for urologists, residents, and fellows who are interested in erectile dysfunction.
Features: The primary authors are a premier group of clinicians and investigators drawn primarily from North America. A European perspective would have been a welcome contribution in areas where therapy is somewhat different. However, this does not take away from the excellent panel of contributors to this book. Several chapters are an excellent summary of state-of-the-art issues, e.g., post-radical retropubic prostatectomy ED. The state-of-the-art nature, however, does suffer in book form as this science is rapidly evolving. Other chapters will really function as classics for clinicians; the surgical treatment of erectile dysfunction with penile prosthesis and the Peyronie's surgery chapter are excellent reviews and summaries which will be time tested.
Assessment: In general, this is an eminently clinically usable book which urologists would be wise to consider.
