Description: This is a comprehensive review of the current state of the art with respect to BPH evaluation and management. The author has produced a concise but complete review of important issues including anatomic/pathophysiologic considerations, medical management, and surgical treatment.
Purpose: The purpose was to produce a concise, readable but exhaustive review of issues surrounding the evaluation and management of BPH. This is an extremely timely and worthwhile goal given the multitude of options available to physicians and patients.
Audience: The book is primarily written for practicing urologists and urology residents in training. The primary author and section contributors are a highly credible group.
Features: The book covers the major aspects of managing a patient with BPH including a thorough discussion of pathophysiology, diagnostic evaluation, and medical/surgical/procedural intervention. The evaluation and pathophysiology chapters are handled quite well as are the minimally invasive therapies. Conspicuously absent is a discussion of photoselective vaporization (laser) of the prostate.
Assessment: This is a high quality, comprehensive review of BPH management. This area is changing so rapidly that it is almost impossible to produce a book that is completely up-to-date. This type of review, particularly if followed by updated editions, would greatly assist practicing urologists in providing a practical review of the topic and in staying on the cutting edge in treating patients with BPH.
