Description: This is a guide to help healthcare providers improve communication with their patients about their experience throughout the cancer treatment process.
Purpose: The purpose is to get healthcare providers to think about survivorship as they guide their patients though the initial diagnosis of cancer, treatment, and recovery. It also discusses how patients can be involved in their own recovery, beginning with the initial diagnosis, by using the LEARN (Living, Education, Activity, Rest, Nutrition) system.
Audience: The intended audience is providers, both midlevels and physicians, treating patients with cancer. Nurses and support staff also would benefit from this information and point of view.
Features: This book addresses the important issues of survivorship, with an emphasis on starting recovery right from the initial diagnosis. Several helpful worksheets for patients help them focus on what is important to them and how to communicate that to the health professionals guiding their care.
Assessment: This is a nice reminder to healthcare providers to focus on recovery even as their patients are just beginning treatment. As cancer patients are surviving longer and longer, their quality of life after treatment becomes that much more important.
