Description: This book on pediatric disease is designed as a comprehensive guide for pediatric and neonatal as well as adult nurses of young people.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a reference guide for use at the bedside. It is not intended to be an exhaustive text on congenital heart disease, but it does provide an excellent working knowledge of these lesions.
Audience: The audience is primarily neonatal and pediatric cardiac nurses, and even adult nurses of young people with congenital heart disease. It is primarily written for the nursing staff and others who care for these patients with congenital and acquired heart disease.
Features: The book starts off with a review of embryology, development, and normal anatomy and physiology of the heart. There are chapters on the examination of the patient, including techniques on blood pressure, the electrocardiogram, echocardiogram, cardiac cath and angiography. The text on congenital heart disease is divided into acyanotic, cyanotic, pathophysiology, symptoms and signs, diagnosis, the use of diagnostic techniques, and management of these patients. All chapters contain clear drawings of each of these congenital and acquired cardiac lesions and their surgical management. Cyanotic heart disease can be looked upon as a problem of inadequate pulmonary blood flow. There is management of the ventilator and cardiopulmonary bypass. There is a brief review of cardiac arrhythmias, including ventricular fibrillation management, and even the intra-aortic balloon pump in children. There is a detailed chapter on drug management. Of some interest is the fact that Enoximone is included, but Milrinone is not. There is an interesting chapter on the management of the dying child.
Assessment: This is a well-written book with clear and concise information. There are seven pages of glossary for the abbreviations, although some of these can be difficult, e.g., MAPCA for major aortal pulmonary collateral arteries. There are 357 references provided in the back as well as an appendix of lab values, blood group analysis, and a care-pathway for a cardiac catheterization. This is a well-written book that pediatric and neonatal nurses should readily appreciate.
