Description: This is an update of a manual on nephrology.
Purpose: It is designed as a reference for medical students, residents, nephrology fellows, and many other providers with exposure to daily nephrology care.
Audience: This is an excellent tool for nephrologists and nephrology fellows, but it also would be helpful for internists and critical care physicians because of its concise nature.
Features: The 16 sections begin with fluid and electrolyte disorders, acid-base disorders, and calcium disorders. Subsequent sections cover in detail the diagnosis and management of different renal disorders, including chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury. This section reviews glomerulonephritis and vasculitis. One section covers renal replacement therapy, hypertension, pregnancy-related complications, and renal transplant. The final section presents practical guidelines for drug dosing in patients with impaired kidney functions. The book features suggested readings at the end of each chapter, along with many figures and tables to enhance learning.
Assessment: This is an ideal book for medical students and residents. It is also a good reference for nephrology fellows, nephrologists, hospitalists, and intensivists. The drug dosing and practical guidelines on more than 500 drugs also make this book attractive to pharmacy students and practicing pharmacists. The graphs and tables are really good and could potentially help the provider be more efficient. Suggested readings at the end of each section are helpful, providing details on selected topics. Although the latest edition covers most topics in detail, chapter 12, on the patient receiving chronic renal replacement with dialysis, merits more detail, especially regarding complications of different modalities of dialysis. Another limitation is that the images are not very clear because of their size and because they are in black and white. These minor limitations aside, this edition offers excellent practical guidance on most of the common renal problems. I would recommend this as a companion for training providers, but also as a quick reference for providers doing rounds with nephrology patients in the hospital.
