Description: Now 35 years old and in its seventh edition, Manual of Pediatric Anesthesia "is designed as a concise but comprehensive pocketbook guide to pediatric anesthesia practice." As such, it covers vast amounts of information in short, pithy chapters. However, at 650 pages it is pocket sized except for how thick it is.
Purpose: The three authors state: "The Manual outlines the important considerations when anaesthetizing infants and children, describes management problems, and presents a course of action for treating many of your pediatric patients." These lofty goals are achieved in this book.
Audience: It is appropriately written at a level easily understood by students, residents, faculty not fully conversant with pediatric anesthesia, and even experienced pediatric anesthesiologists who need to quickly verify facts or memory. The authors are well known pediatric anesthesiologists at three major pediatric surgery centers, two in the United States (Buffalo and Boston) and one in Canada (Vancouver).
Features: The manual has 18 chapters, five pages of abbreviations, and three appendixes. As expected, it opens with a historical background and then proceeds to anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, techniques, regional anesthesia, and comments on postoperative care. The next 10 chapters are system-specific and divided primarily by the pediatric surgery specialty being supported: general, thoracic, dental, ophthalmology, etc. The book is complete and reiterates general principles in all areas, but tries to avoid duplication and repetition. A large portion of the book is in the three appendixes: A) anesthetic implications of syndromes — just under 100 pages, B) cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and C) drug dosing. The book contains charts but no illustrations; everything is presented in black and white. There are no references, but copious suggested readings conclude each chapter.
Assessment: This continues to be a complete source of quick information and reference for the safe and effective anesthetic care of children.
