Purpose: The purpose is to provide a concise presentation of core information with many visual and memory aids. However, this text is not designed to provide a comprehensive reference of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.
Audience: It is targeted at the bedside nurse of the critically ill or injured child. The structure and content will provide an additional reference to nursing students and resident physicians.
Features: The manual is organized by organ or system to complement the larger text. An updated look at essential core knowledge and current treatments and therapies is provided in each chapter. The chapters have consistent presentation which aids in locating references. Special features include "Pearls" at the beginning of each chapter, case scenarios, tables, charts, and illustrations. The suggested readings at the end of each chapter offer the student or novice nurse additional resources.
Assessment: This textbook is a worthwhile contribution to the field of pediatric critical care nursing as a limited number of references are available for this specialty. This is a valuable counterpart to the larger text.
