About the Author

Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911) was an American minister, soldier, abolitionist, and writer.  During the Civil War, he served as colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first African-American regiment.  After the war, he continued fighting for racial equality, and for women's rights as well.  He was a friend and editor of Emily Dickinson.
