Overview

Published in 1905, this pamphlet consists of three lectures Adler gave before the Society of Ethical Culture in New York City.  After setting forth the responsibilities inherent in the married state, Adler questions whether divorce can ever be an ethical action, concluding that it cannot, but that in the worst cases of incompatibility or abuse the option of separation remains open.

About the Author

Felix Adler (1851-1933) was a Jewish professor of political and social ethics who came to America from Germany at the age of six. Founder of the Society of Ethical Culture in 1877, Adler believed in a social system that derived its ethical tenets from reason as opposed to organized religion and that acted on the basis of public good.  Among his works are Life and Destiny (1903), An Ethical Philosophy of Life (1918), and Incompatibility in Marriage (1920).
