Description: This book is part of the series Handbooks in Practical Animal Cell Biology, and is devoted to the subject of culturing stromal cells from bone marrow.
Purpose: It has a strong practical focus. It contains a number of chapters on techniques to isolate and culture marrow stromal cells. This is an important, but relatively small, research topic; the book fulfills the authors' objectives as they are stated in the preface.
Audience: It is written for scientists who wish to actually carry out the techniques described rather than as a general source of information on the subject of bone marrow stromal cells. The contributors are experts in the field.
Features: The book opens with a general chapter on the non-bone and nonhemopoietic cells in bone marrow. The remaining chapters describe specific techniques for culturing each of the stromal cell types. Strong features include detailed protocols on culturing the cells. The illustrations are good and appropriate to a text of this type. There are no significant shortcomings.
Assessment: This is a useful, brief, inexpensive book of techniques on culturing marrow stromal cells. I am unaware of any other books that deal with this material. It would be useful as a practical guide and reference source to researchers in the field.
