Overview

Since losing its bid to become the state capital of Michigan in 1847, Marshall has won many awards and accolades. Home to the largest national historic landmark district in the country in the small urban category, Marshall has been called a "textbook of American architecture" by the National Parks Service. Marshall was one of the first four Michigan Main Street Communities and is the site of the oldest county fair in the state. In recent years, the community has been named one of the "dozen distinctive destinations" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

About the Author

Debbie Pardoe, a native of Detroit and a graduate of Ferris State University, moved to Marshall in 1972 and immediately began collecting Marshall memorabilia, focusing on postcards. Pardoe's collection now numbers well over 700, and she continues to acquire new additions. Susan Collins, also a transplant to Marshall, moved to town in 1973 and married the town historian and promoter, John Collins, in 1977. She is the author of Marshall in the Images of America series. Pardoe and Collins have been friends and shared a love of Marshall and its history for more than three decades.

Arcadia Publishing prints many books about cities, towns and counties all over the country. Here in our area we are very fortunate to have several authors of Arcadia books that are about interesting places in out region. On Saturday, November 15th at 1:00 pm Barnes & Noble in Battle Creek will host a book signing that will feature six local authors who have penned a total of eight books about our town and neighboring area.
The most recent book is Postcard History Series, Marshall by DEBBIE PARDOE and SUSAN COLLINS. Postacrds of Main Street with horse and buggies, the fair, mansions, and the fountain are contained in this interesting book. Susan Collins will also be signing her book Images of America, Marshall.
Battle Creek resident, KURT THORNTON, will be signing his two books on Battle Creek, Images of America, Battle Creek, which was published in 2004, and Then & Now, Battle Creek, which was published in 2005. Both of Kurt's books have been very successful because of Kurt's knowledge of Battle Creek.
FRANCK PASSIC an Albion Historian, has written a book about his hometown. Images of America, Albion in the 20th Century was first published in 2002. It contains numerous photos going back to the early 1900's. This volume is packed with many facts that span the century.
Another local author who has written two Arcadia books in RANDALL HAZELBAKER. Randall published Images of America, Coldwater in 2004 and Images of America, Branch County in 2005. So if you hail from Coldwater, Union City, or Sturgis, just to name a few, Randall's books would be of great interest to you.
Our last book is Postcard History Series, Mackinaw City by Battle Creek native MADELINE OKERMAN AIDE. Madeline's book was published last year. There are so many locals that head "up north" throughout the year that this book will be one everyone will enjoy.
