Description: This book accomplishes what its title suggests and discusses some of the more complicated soft tissue procedures that orthopedic surgeons perform. It focuses on flap coverage to address tissue defects after trauma as well as a few other trauma-related issues, such as fasciotomies and nerve and vessel reconstruction. An accompanying ebook version allows users to access the material on a computer or mobile device via a friendly interface, and includes a small selection of surgical videos.
Purpose: The principal aim is to discuss how to avoid wound problems, and if they do occur, how to address them. This is a relevant topic for all orthopedic surgeons and, with the advent of newer technologies and commercial products, one that needs to be revisited frequently. The authors do an excellent job of addressing this aim and the accompanying videos are very helpful.
Audience: Several of the contributing authors are leaders in the field and they have successfully created a book that will help those in the advanced stages of their training as well experienced surgeons. Both orthopedic surgeons and plastic surgeons will find this book informative.
Features: It discusses the basics of wound healing and incisions and progresses to more complicated topics, such as free flap coverage in difficult areas. Functional reconstruction is discussed to a limited extent. For example, the authors discuss some tendon transfers to address rotator cuff deficits, although they do not discuss tendon transfers in other areas. Readers will need a different resource to learn about functional reconstruction. The main focus of this book is wound prevention and coverage, and it does an excellent job in this regard.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent book. It is great to see videos as part of this edition. The book attempts to take on a very broad field and does an excellent job, although many readers will need to seek out additional resources to fully grasp the nuances. The discussions in this book are insightful and informative. This would be a great addition to the library of any surgeon dealing with these issues.
