Description: The title of this book implies that this is the basic information that physicians should know, and the authors have edited the material with great precision. From an organization renowned for its educational products, this book is a superb addition that continues that tradition.
Purpose: The foreword notes, "One of the key traditions in medicine is the passing of knowledge from physician to physician," while the preface states, "Scientific observations and clinical advances are moving at a remarkable pace." The authors have focused on these two concepts and have produced a major contribution in meeting these goals.
Audience: This is a book for all levels of students and practitioners. It describes the basics which students must learn/know and upon which practicing physicians will build. All the authors are respected contributors in their specialties.
Features: The approach is: "What is it? What do you do for it?" Along with basic descriptions, the book includes algorithms, extraordinary figures and color photographs, intuitive tables, and characteristic radiographs. Subjects frequently have explanatory text followed by salient bullet points of must-remember practicality. The book is organized in a traditional organ systems format, with many additional areas of specific interest such as preparing for the USMLE examination, men's health, women's health, preventive medicine, and medical ethics. This is clearly one of the books to study for the boards. A unique aspect is the lack of references, not an omission, but a conscious decision in keeping with the idea of "concise." The index is complete and easy to use.
Assessment: This is one of the very top books in this area. As the title implies, it is concise and to the point, without extraneous or controversial topics included in larger texts. The authors have remained true to their objective. Further, they have significantly aided the passing of knowledge from physician to physician.
