Description: The question and answer format of this review book, part of the Specialty Board Review series, makes it a helpful resource for candidates preparing to take a pain certification examination.
Purpose: The purpose is to help readers pass various pain certification exams as well as to help them identify any weaknesses in their knowledge. The authors are more successful in achieving the former objective than the latter.
Audience: The book is meant for all physicians who are practicing interventional pain medicine. It is certainly a very helpful book for any pain fellow getting ready for board examinations.
Features: The first four chapters cover basic information like anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. The next three chapters deal with pain assessment and various disease states, followed by three chapters on interventional and noninterventional pain management. The final four chapters cover behavioral and psychological aspects of pain management, such as addiction and disability, and various medicolegal aspects. The book includes a list of suggested readings for each topic. Each chapter has more or less the same format of about 50 to 100 questions, all about clinically relevant topics. Half are K-type questions and the other half require readers to pick the best option. The answers at the end of each chapter nicely explain the correct options, often quoting a study for a reference.
Assessment: The authors have tried to make this book a "one stop shop" for various pain examinations. There are other pain review books available (Pain Medicine: A Comprehensive Review, 2nd edition, Raj (Elsevier, 2003) and Pain Review, Waldman (Elsevier, 2009)) but none is as useful as this book is in preparing readers for the pain boards.
