An easily accessible introduction to medical microbiology

Description: This is a general, broad ranging medical microbiology textbook for medical students. It is the ninth edition, last published in 2016. Although comprehensive in scope, the topics/infectious agents are described superficially to introduce medical students to the basics of the field.
Purpose: The book's purpose is to present the complex field of medical microbiology in a simplified and direct manner. These are certainly worthy objectives, but they are challenging. Some concepts are successfully explained in a simplified manner, while other topics, such as innate immunology in chapter 8, are presented so superficially that they may confuse readers not already familiar with the topic. Presenting the material both in print and online adds value not only because of the convenience of online material, but also because of the online infectious disease chapter that lists microbes by organ system and disease with hyperlinks to respective chapters. The website also contains additional practice questions. It is a valuable asset to the print edition.
Audience: The book provides an excellent introduction to the realm of microbiology and, as such, can serve as a foundation and launching point for medical students learning the basic tenets of this field. The authors do a tremendous job in coalescing this broad and ever-evolving field into an easy-to-read textbook and are credible authorities based on their respective training and expertise.
Features: This book covers a broad array of topics ranging from chapters describing specific pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites) to immunology, microbiology techniques, and the microbiome. The writing is excellent and the subject material is organized very well (that is, introduction to microbiology and immunology precede discussion of specific organisms). The book is very well illustrated with clear, easy-to-understand color graphics. All features are available on the website. The new edition has made efforts to stay up to date. For example, the microbiome sections are very timely; however, the statement in the preface that the microbiome outnumbers the human host 10 cells to 1 was long ago disproved in a Nature publication from 2016. The immunology section has some glaring errors and it was frustrating to see that table 52.2 and figure 52.5 have the same errors as the seventh edition that used the same table and figure. Specifically, table 52.2 lists Aedes/Culex and Aedes/Culiseta respectively as vectors for VEEV and EEEV but not in figure 52.5.
Assessment: As an introduction to medical microbiology for students, this book is excellent. The updated edition justifies replacing the previous editions. For example, the microbiome chapter is a timely, high-quality addition. For experienced clinicians, Mandell, Douglas, and Bennett's Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases, 9th edition, Bennett et al. (Elsevier, 2020) is a more advanced, comprehensive resource.

This is an outstanding first text for a course on medical microbiology. In addition to various well-organized chapters on bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens, the authors have included an excellent section on basic principles of medical microbiology. The last edition of this text was published in 1990. The book has been written as a introductory level text covering the epidemiology, clinical syndrome, laboratory diagnosis, and treatment of a broad range of microbial pathogens responsible for causing clinical disease. The primary audience for this text includes medical students, medical technology students, and upper-level undergraduate microbiology students interested in the field of medical microbiology. The book has several outstanding features. Each chapter has many excellent figures and tables, enhancing the overall instructional value of the text. Within each chapter, the authors have also carefully highlighted key words or phrases. This facilitates the student's e fforts to sort out the important facts or concepts associated with the various microbial pathogens. In addition, at the end of each chapter is a list of sentinel/recent literature citations that the student can use for further study. The text has only one minor shortcoming and that is a superficial coverage of the opportunistic mycoses. Yeast infections have emerged as a major problem in the critical care populations and I am sure that the authors will rectify this omission in future editions. The authors of medical microbiology in this third edition have again successfully developed a first-rate text covering the broad discipline of medical microbiology. Each chapter is well organized, containingnumerous figures and tables. The authors are themselves outstanding educator-scientists and their collective experiences have been combined to produce an outstanding teaching text.
