Description: This is a new physiology text designed for first-year medical students. The authors are all well recognized experts in their research fields and have admirably written their chapters at the proper level, avoiding the oversimplifications of survey texts and the encyclopedic approach that inundates and overwhelms the beginning student with minutiae.
Purpose: The book deliberately downplays neurophysiology, a wise move in light of the separate courses in neuroscience that are now so prevalent. Otherwise, it covers in systematic fashion and in the normal sequence the usual topics covered in a one-semester course.
Audience: The text is geared to medical students. It is probably too advanced for adoption by other health sciences students.
Features: It has a number of features that make it very user friendly, including a preface for each chapter with an outline and objectives, questions and answers for each chapter, a box with a pertinent clinical problem. Each topic is highlighted by a headline providing a succinct summary of the section. The book is lavishly illustrated with two-color diagrams that clearly sum up the topic.
Assessment: All in all, this is a superior text especially suited for the limited time now available to teach physiology. It is a handsome publication, very readable and pitched at the proper level. It is very suitable for adoption as a recommended text.
