About the Author

About the Author

Katie Walsh Flanagan, EdD, LAT, ATC, was raised in Carmel, California. She graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and from Illinois State University with a master’s degree in Athletic Training before embarking on a career in athletic training. She was the head athletic trainer for women and a lecturer at Western Illinois University before leaving to become the head athletic trainer with the men’s professional soccer team in Chicago, Illinois, for 3 years. During her 10 years in Illinois, she was active in both the state and District 4 athletic training organizations.
In 1990, Dr. Flanagan was hired as an athletic trainer and lecturer at California State University, Fresno, and she earned a doctorate in Education at the University of Southern California. In 1995, she accepted the position she held for 27 years: Director of Sports Medicine at East Carolina University (ECU) in Greenville, North Carolina. As an athletic trainer, Dr. Flanagan has traveled internationally with both men’s and women’s US Soccer teams and volunteered at the Pan American and Atlanta Olympic Games. She provided medical coverage for cheerleading and other sports at ECU for 15 years and still works as an athletic trainer helping out with ECU football and other events as needed.
As a dedicated member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), Dr. Flanagan is a member of the NATA Board of Directors and represented District 3—the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association from 2015 to 2022. She has been an active volunteer for the national, district, and state levels of NATA and has also served on the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, which oversees athletic training education, for 7 years. Dr. Flanagan is an accomplished speaker and has made dozens of international and national presentations and 50 regional/district/state presentations, as well as published dozens of articles and book chapters. Dr. Flanagan is considered an expert in athlete safety policy, especially with environmental and lightning safety. In that area, she is internationally known for her lightning safety policies that govern recreation and sport.
Dr. Flanagan was named the North Carolina College/University Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2000 and 2006 by the North Carolina Athletic Trainers’ Association and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2013. NATA has recognized her with their National Service Award (2006) and Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer honor (2010).
She is married to Sean Flanagan, and they reside in Greenville, North Carolina, with their two rescue cats, Abby and Tucker.

Description: This book teaches medical terminology using memorization of vocabulary tables and written quizzes. It is structured with limited explanatory narratives, word tables, exercises, and simple quizzes. Figures are primarily illustrations of body systems with a few photographs of diagnostic techniques. While there are no supplemental online materials for learners, faculty have access to sample quizzes, PowerPoints, and test bank questions through the publisher's eFacultyLounge portal. This third edition is an update to the previous version, which was published in 2017.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to offer an introduction to medical terminology with figural and illustrative images as well as self-guided exercises. It aims to serve as a companion text to an in-person medical terminology course. Each chapter includes a case study as a final exercise, but these are very elementary and not as complex as those found in other medical terminology texts. The book lacks realistic clinical vignettes or electronic medical record (EMR) simulations.
Audience: The book is aimed at students in high school and college, primarily allied health students. For beginners, this is an accessible book. It is rudimentary and may seem juvenile to some readers, with its emphasis on piratical storytelling as a framing device. While appropriate for learners in a secondary school setting, upper-level college or university students will be better served by more advanced medical terminology texts. The author has written the two previous editions of the book and has extensive experience as an athletic trainer. The contributing author has worked as a healthcare administrator and athletic trainer. Unlike other works in the genre, this book does not have an editorial review team of experts across the health professional spectrum.
Features: The book is organized by body system and follows the conventions of the genre. It is divided into three sections: general terminology overview; body systems-specific terminology; and appendices with abbreviations, ICD/CPT coding, and pharmacology terms. Learning objectives are clearly articulated at the beginning of each chapter. The suffixes, prefixes, and root words are presented in tables. The book offers limited contextual narratives throughout. The learning activities include worksheets with simplistic word matching, term creation and combination, and fill-in exercises. The book also presents limited real-world application of the terms. Students are not introduced to the complexities of reading, writing, and translating medical terminology in the EMR or with patients. Case studies related to the terms discussed follow each chapter, but they are not complex. The book makes extensive use of color images, particularly anatomical and physiological illustrations. The illustrations primarily show white bodies, with some limited racial and ethnic diversity in photographic figures. There is no student-focused online component, web-based content, or complementary ebook. The only online resources include test bank questions and PowerPoint slides for faculty use, listed under "athletic training" on eFacultyLounge. It is difficult to find the materials, and users must register an account; the book itself does not provide an access code.
Assessment: For novice learners, this is an accessible and robust book. It is clearly meant to complement an ongoing in-person course and will be less useful as a self-guided learning tool. In addition, the updates between editions are unclear. Compared to other texts in the field, the book is simplistic and offers limited narrative context and real-world applications of medical terminology. It does include copious color illustrations and anatomical structures, which are very useful. The lack of supplemental online materials such as interactive activities and a pronunciation key is notable. For upper-year undergraduate students and health professional students in medical or nursing school, more advanced texts will likely provide a better learning experience, particularly when coupled with the robust online materials offered by those works.
