Overview

St. Francis in this prayer has given us a few phrases that hint at the rich wisdom that came to him from God, but the knowledge of God cannot be entirely expressed in words. Our human languages are evolving to deal better with spiritual experience, and we also have the languages of music and the arts, which can express a wider range of meaning than our intellects alone can absorb. The best use of this prayer is as a pointer to God, who affirms its wisdom in our hearts and points us toward further wisdom.

About the Author

Anne Curo has been an active attender of the San Diego Friends Meeting for the past 13 years. She has had mini-careers as a journalist, a performer of early music, and, with her husband, Forrest, as a bookstore proprietor. She has also volunteered as an activist for peace and homeless issues.
With her husband, she helped found and co-edit Street Light, San Diego’s award winning street newspaper.
This pamphlet was revised and edited during her 2002-2003 residency at Pendle Hill. It arose during a Quaker silent retreat at a Benedictine monastery. She has written many other literary pieces—stories, essays, novels and poems—very few of which have ever been published. She also draws and paints.
