Memoirs of a Novelist is one of Virginia Woolf's best stories. A wonderful story about the nature of biography, something that Virginia Woolf would continue to explore throughout her life. The complexity comes from the writer's skillful handling of the layers of fiction within the narrative. Woolf beautifully weaves together the story of a fictional writer, Miss Willatt, and also of her later biographer, Miss Linsett. And she does it so well that we become convinced that these two people exist in reality. Miss Willatt did not want her life to be made public, but her friend convinced her that she should write her biography. And so questions are asked about the role of writers of both fact and fiction.
