Merlin's Son-Young Mind Edition
It betided that one of the author’s (Craig Dean) savored responsibility as a father was to put his youngest daughter (Ryann) to bed each evening. While doing so, she would invariably ask him to tell her a bedtime story. Usually he would agree and give her the option of hearing about what transpired in the Emergency Room that day (The author was an ER physician), or another saga about the exploits of Meteor (Merlin’s Son). As it was Merlin’s Son was given form and substance through this nightly ritual of a father sharing imaginative bedtime stories with his nascent daughter. What began as pure narratives was elevated to another dimension when the author decided that Meteor might like to reach out to his daughter and send her regular notes and small gifts. The later proved to be a most useful vehicle for reinforcing ‘good citizen behavior,’ while also adding another dimension to the relationship between his daughter and this icon of mythology.
The saga begins with the ‘lightness of being’ as could only be perceived from the first flush of an adventurous child. The content and form of these early chapters parallels the simplicity of language but surreal imagination of this budding phase of life. Later, the youngster matures into an adolescent and the dialogue phosphoresces to this transitional high energy state of being. The author was most touched as a youth by the Scottish writer J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan and the French novelist Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and gives us Merlin’s Son in an analogous genre.
