Description: This is a major update of a classic book on the spread of disease within the abdominal cavity. The previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: The purpose is to explain abdominal anatomy as the foundation for understanding the spread of disease within it. This is essential information for clinicians and radiologists who specialize in this area. The authors achieve the goal extremely well.
Audience: Written for radiologists, particularly those in training or in the beginning years of practice, the book covers core knowledge that should be learned at that level. Surgeons also may enjoy reviewing this material for the imaging correlation. The authors are recognized experts in abdominal radiology, and the book is considered a classic.
Features: The book is organized in a straightforward manner. Embryology and anatomy are covered in beginning chapters, followed by a thorough review of the various compartments of the abdominal cavity and the mechanisms of spread of disease. Patterns of spread of disease for each specific organ are then covered in detail. The anatomic material is very well explained and illustrated with photographs, drawings, and cadaver sections. The clinical material also is superb with a tremendous number of cases, relying heavily on CT images, but also using MRI and PET modalities.
Assessment: This classic book on radiology of the abdomen does a wonderful job of explaining the various anatomical compartments within the abdomen and how they relate to the spread of disease. This edition has 680 new images and illustrations, as well as new chapters, bringing it up to date with multiplanar CT and MRI images. I enjoyed just looking at the tremendous number of clinical cases, collected from a large number of sources over the years. I now have a better understanding of key concepts, particularly the internal hernias that always give me a diagnostic problem. I highly recommend this book for residents in training.
