Overview

Biosurfactants are the surface-active biomolecules produced by microorganisms. In recent years, biosurfactants have gained commercial significance due to their unique properties, such as high surface activity, high specificity, low toxicity, tolerance to pH, temperature and ionic strength, biodegradability, excellent emulsifying and demulsifying ability, antimicrobial activity, ability to work under extreme conditions, and relative ease of preparation. Biosurfactants are used in several industries including organic chemicals, petroleum, petrochemicals, mining, metallurgy (mainly bioleaching), agrochemicals, fertilizers, foods, beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and many others.

Green surfactants, due to their amphiphatic structure promotes seed germination, exhibit biocontrol activity by inhibition of phytopathogen and including systemic resistance in plants and also play a significant role in bioremediation of pollutants. Green surfactants are less toxic, more eco-friendly and have significant application in agriculture.

The aim of this book is to highlight key aspects from basics to advanced concepts, classifications, production and applications in various fields such as agriculture, health, bioremediation, industries, pharmaceutical, oil recovery, environment, nanotechnology. It also serves as an excellent and expensive literature on fermentation, recovery, genomics and metagenomics of biosurfactant production. The book focuses on the biosurfactant production from bacteria, the diversity of biosurfactant producing bacteria, and industrial need of biosurfactant.

About the Author

R.Z. Sayyed is Professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology at PSGVP Mandal's Arts, Science & Commerce College, Shahada 9KBC North Maharshtra University, Jalgao), India. He is the President of Asian PGPR Society of Sustainable Agriculture. To his credit, he has received the "Prof. M. M. Sharma Award" from (2018); "Best Teachers Award" (2016) from the North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon, India; "Green Globe Award" from the ISBR, Bareilly, India; "Young Scientist Award" for the years of 2005, 2008, and 2012 from the DST and DAE, GOI. He has over 18 years of teaching and 16 years of research experience in Microbiology and Biotechnology. He trained several graduate, post-graduate and research students and has mentored 7 PhD students. He has authored over 130 research papers in reputed journals, 18 Edited volumes/reference books and 50 textbooks. He has successfully demonstrated the transfer of laboratory research to the farmer’s fields in PGPR related technologies. He has delivered many invited talks at several South East Asian and European Countries.

Hesham Ali El Enshasy is Professor in Bioprocess Engineering, Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Energy, and Assistant Director for Innovation and Products Development, Institute of Bioproducts Development, University Technology Malaysia (UTM). He is also the Director for Food, Pharmaceutical & Bio-Engineering Division, Division 15A (Food Director), American Institute of Chemical Engineering (AIChE). Before joining UTM, he was the assistant director of City for Scientific Research for Research Institutes Affairs (Alexandria, Egypt). Prof. El Enshasy received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Microbiology (Ain Shams University, Egypt), Dr. rer. Nat. in Industrial Biotechnology (TU Braunschweig, Germany 1998), M.Sc. Technology Management (UTM, Malaysia). Postdoc Faculty of Chemical Engineering, The Ohio State University (USA) and GBF, (Germany). He is also visiting guest professor and honor guest professor to many top ranking universities worldwide.

He has established many research and industrial platforms for the industrial production of different bioactive metabolites using microbial, mammalian and plant cells in many universities, research institutes and companies. Prof. El Enshasy is active as editorial board member for many scientific journal and he is currently the Editor-in-Chief for International Journal of Biotechnology for Wellness Industries (IJBWI). He is also the co-editor for the book entitled Bioprocessing Technologies in Biorefinery for Sustainable Production of Fuels, Chemicals, and Polymers by John Wiley and Sons, 2013.

Bee Hameeda is Assistant Professor in Microbiology, University College of Science, Osmania University (OU), Hyderabad, India. She has been visiting Scientist at International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and Post-Doctoral Fellow at Department of Plant Science, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. She has 34 publications and has presented 55 conference papers. She is a reviewer for different journals such as Process Biochemistry, Basic Journal of Microbiology, Gut Pathogens, Environmental Sustainability, Journal of Surfactants and Detergents etc. She has been granted a patent and is actively involved in research on microbial surfactants for technology transfer. Dr. Bee Hameeda received two awards from her Doctoral study, one AMI (Association of Microbiologists of India) Young Scientist Award in field of Agriculture Microbiology and one from ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) best thesis Award, Jawaharlal Nehru Award for Outstanding Post-Graduate Agriculture Research. She also received Distinguished Scientist Award for her work on eco-friendly and sustainable research.
