Notable as one of the only records in
the Dear Hunter's discography that isn't a grand concept album, 2013's
Migrant still managed to get some kind of special elevated treatment for its tenth anniversary on
Migrant Returned. Re-recorded with more studio wizardry and beefed-up 2020s production, frontman
Casey Crescenzo took it one step further and completely rearranged the song order to create a brand-new listening experience that longtime fans should appreciate. Comprised of all 18 tracks that were released from the era -- the standard LP, bonus streaming tracks, and the "Migrations Annex" EP --
Migrant Returned now begins with "An Escape," with former opener "Bring You Down" stripped to piano basics and pushed toward the album's middle. Most changes are fairly subtle -- requiring the truly dedicated ear to suss out what's been altered -- so this is not a drastic makeover that ruins an already-pristine original. Instead,
Crescenzo has breathed new light into a potentially underrated catalog gem that
Dear Hunter enthusiasts can rediscover, and Acts-only folks can give another chance. Regardless of which form it takes,
Migrant Returned is a fantastic effort that features some of the band's best work. ~ Neil Z. Yeung
