Overview

In this award winning short story, Kelly Holmsted finds a large Mississippi pearl when she's barely a teenager. Refusing to sell it, she keeps the pearl close to her at all times, until losing it in an incident she refuses to talk about.

Many years later at a family get-together at a cabin near a frozen lake, Kelly finally reveals the secret of her pearl, as well as coming to terms with her abusive husband in a way that only she can. But will the cost be too great? Can her brother save her from an impending disaster before it's too late?

He’s the recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board 2010 Artists Initiative Grant, as well as a 2010 Gulliver Travel and Research Grant. He lives in Minnesota with his wife and two kids.
