This book on imaging of the alimentary tube covers all modalities used in assessment of the pharynx, esophagus, stomach, and small and large bowel. The liver, spleen, pancreas, and biliary tree are not included. The aim is to "describe and document" advances in alimentary tract radiology. This is a timely publication bringing together information on the cross-sectional imaging techniques now available to complement fluoroscopy and the more traditional methods of gastrointestinal imaging. The editor does not specify a target audience but it would seem that the book would be equally useful to radiologists and gastroenterologists, since GI imaging is best achieved when these specialists work as a team. There are contributions from many experts in the field. Even so, the book reads fluently. The text is beautifully illustrated with radiographs and line diagrams, all of which are clearly annotated. Multiple references are provided for the reader interested in more in-depth information. The inclusion of anatomy, physiology, and expected postoperative appearances is welcomed. The chapter on advances in surgery will be useful to any practicing radiologist. This book provides an exceptionally useful amount of information on the GI "tube" in a compact but beautifully illustrated text. The inclusion of anatomy, physiology, surgical techniques, developments in interventional radiology, and up to date information on newer imaging modalities and diseases, such as those seen in the immune compromised host, provides for a multidisciplinary approach to GI evaluation. To my knowledge no other radiology text does this. I strongly recommend the book to anyone involved in GI imaging, and my copywill be going to my residents!
