Description: This book presents an overview of monitors that have recently been developed and, most importantly, summarizes the science behind them. Each chapter analyzes the literature concerning the monitor in a clear, understandable fashion. The authors chose to begin the book with a review of statistics. The review is well written, providing an outstanding overview of statistics to enable readers to understand the future information to be presented.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide information concerning recently developed monitors that are used in the care of patients in the operating room to help practitioners update their knowledge and to summarize the literature for residents and students. Most of these monitors have been developed and refined in the past 10 years. The inclusion of surface ultrasound as a monitor is important as most tend to view this modality solely for diagnosis and forget that it has other uses in the operating room.
Audience: The book has a multipurpose audience. For those who trained prior to these monitors becoming used routinely, it clearly outlines the goal of the monitor and its use in the perioperative setting. For residents and students, the book presents the science behind the monitor. The writing is clear and understandable. As such, the book can be used by any anesthesia provider regardless of level of training or years of practice. All readers will finish with additional knowledge that will improve their practice.
