Summer 2016 Quilter's Connection

Quiltmaker and collector Bill Volckening has been adding eye-catching quilts to his collection for more than 25 years. His acquisitions have been documented in publications, on his blog, and in public exhibitions. In this book, he provides patterns—and superb instructions—to make 12 quilts based on his antique and vintage collections. The designs include those built on classics, such as Log Cabin, Pineapple, and Lone Star, as well as others that are less well-known, such as Cross Roads to Bachelor's Hall, shown below left. Bill Volckening draws the reader's attention to any inconsistencies in the original quilts that make them unique and quirky, but also provides alternative instructions for those who might prefer uniformity. Each project is presented in two different sizes and, in addition, some are showcased in a new interpretation made by a quilter working in the 'modern quilt' style. (Abbreviated instructions are provided for these quilts, as well). Lots of diagrams and close-up photographs make the instructions easy to follow.

Old quilt designs have been brought right up-to-date to create modern treasures. Bill is a quilt collector and he has created 12 new patterns inspired by quilts from the 1840s to the 1970s. I just love that front cover design, but none of them will disappoint. You’ll see the original quilts and Bill’s contemporary design. The quilts also have a smaller pattern as an alternative. Clear photos and instructions throughout. Great designs, great colours and I love the fact that these quilts have a history that has been updated to become modern heirlooms of their own. Modern techniques are used throughout. This book includes templates, tips and an introduction giving you the history of each quilt. This is a wonderful book that I am glad to recommend. It’s a treasure trove of treasures.

Volckening shares some of the highlights of his vintage-quilt collection in this book, which includes brief historical essays about each of the quilts, as well as a "modern-made" adaptation. Volckening and his collaborators have updated the techniques to reflect current quilting fabrics, tools, and practices, and the construction ranges from straightforward patchwork to complex curved piecing or foundation paper piecing. Each pattern also includes a small-scale adaptation, such as a mini quilt or a table runner, perfect for quilters who are drawn to a design but don't want a full-size quilt. VERDICT The glimpses at Volckening's quilt collection are engaging, and his writings about the original quilts are fascinating, but the patterns are the star—and they may inspire modern quilters to look to the past for further inspiration.
