Description: This is an extremely well written, clinically relevant, comprehensive review of the latest literature rendered by an impressive list of contributing authors.
Purpose: The purpose according to author is to "synthesize developing knowledge and present it concisely to all those treating rheumatic patients. Without ignoring what is currently standard treatment, it is to present, in practical detail novel treatments and even those undergoing clinical trials." These objectives are indeed met by the author. With the explosion of a host of new and revolutionary treatments made available in last few years, a book such as this is sorely needed to guide a clinician to optimize patient care.
Audience: According to the author, the book is written for a rheumatology practitioner. According to my judgment, it is indeed most helpful to those practicing rheumatology. The author is a credible authority in the subject matter of the book.
Features: This book covers an exhaustive list of therapeutic topics. From familiar — such as nonsteroidal drugs to unusual such as apoptosis regulation have been discussed in detail. Subjects such as gene therapy are especially well covered. The unique aspect of this book has to be its ability to discuss the latest knowledge in-depth without losing sight of its primary objective, examining its clinical applicability. Paucity of illustrations perhaps is one of its rare shortcomings.
Assessment: In my opinion, this book will prove to be of incomparable value, especially to practicing rheumatologists. It lays forth clearly what can be offered to the patient and why it may be of benefit when faced with the bewildering choices of therapeutic options available today. There are really no other books quite like it.
