Putting together the wonderful quips, quotes, and anecdotes in this book has been an absolute joy. The main reason for my delight is that many of them reminded me of my mom, who passed away several years ago at the age of ninety-five. The quotations about a mother’s advice were particular poignant since I still remember, and live by, the encouraging advice she gave me as I experienced a major disappointment in my life. When I was seven-years-old, my parents took me to see both Broadway musicals, Carousel and Oklahoma. From that day on I wanted to be the person who created “the pretty stage pictures.” I wanted to be a scenic designer. Years later, my dream started to come true when I got into Yale Drama School.

It was a three-year master's degree program. I was one of the twelve first-year design students but because they only needed eight students to design their shows the second year, they let go of four people at the end of the first term. I was one of the four to go. I was told I had no talent.

Of course, I was heartbroken. But when I called my mom in tears, she told me that everything always worked out for the best. And she was right. While my fellow students were still in school, I was working at CBS television designing such national shows for Captain Kangaroo, Merv Griffin, and Jackie Gleason to name but a few (my mother's favorites!)

The quotes about mothers with positive attitudes are also very meaningful for me since my mom got through life with a strong one. My mom, for example, found some good news in the bad news when she was moving to a new apartment. While packing, she had taken too many dishes out of a cabinet and put them on a flimsy folding table. It collapsed breaking half the dishes. When she told me about the incident, she cheerfully noted, “Well, now I have less to ship and less to clean.”

And lastly, the humorous quotations throughout the book also remind me of the great sense of humor my mom had. It is perhaps, in part, her influence of the profession I am in today. As the world’s only “Jollytologist”, I teach people worldwide how to have a positive attitude by getting more humor in their life.

I hope you will enjoy reading the words in this book as much as I had assembling them. I also hope they remind you, if you are a mother, how great you are. Or, how great your mother is or was. This book is a perfect present to yourself, if you are a mother, or to your mother, if she is still around, or to any mother, to say I love you, I appreciate you, I honor you.

What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

"Allen Klein has an uncanny insight into the gift of motherhood. Mom's the Word is a sweet, touching collection that will bring laughter and tears. A delightful read for any mother—or anyone else!"
–Ruby Cheves, MD, National Mother of the Year 2012

"Mom’s the Word celebrates the powerful role that mothers play in our lives and reminds us of the intense joy, frustration, and deep love we experience as mothers. These words honor the mothers we had, acknowledge both the challenges and immense joy of mothering, and ultimately prompt us to reflect on who we want to be in our children’s lives. As I dove into these reflections I found myself I drawn to my computer with an urge to put my own thoughts about mothers and motherhood down on the page. (Who do I want to be for my children, for myself?) I know you will be equally inspired."
—Kate Hopper, Author of Use Your Words: A Writing Guide for Mothers and Ready for Air: A Journey Through Premature Motherhood

"Allen Klein has definitely found the essence of uplifting encouragement and put it into written form." — Inspired Personal Development
