Overview

"This careful and elegant translation makes possible the (re)discovery and dissemination to all non-French readers of this intriguing text that provides an unusual window into the fascinating complexities of Haiti's history.... Captures beautifully the richness, sensibility and poetic style of Glissant’s writing.... Glissant's and Dash's efforts are essential reading for all of those who are interested in colonial and postcolonial studies."—Nicole Kaplan, Caribbean Studies "Edouard Glissant poignantly captures the complex character and historical dilemma of Haiti's revolutionary hero." —James Ferguson, Caribbean Beat

"It is Shakespeare redone from life: grandeur of subject matter, tragic sense of build-up, a poetic language cast in strong and original forms." —Robert Kanters, L'Express

Edouard Glissant's Monsieur Toussaint tells the tragic story of Toussaint L'Ouverture, the charismatic leader of the revolution—the only successful slave revolt in history—that led to Haiti's independence more than two hundred years ago.

Translated by J. Michael Dash in collaboration with the author, this new edition captures the striking essence of the original French play (first published in 1961).
