Overview

Montessori-Based Approach for Alzheimer's and Dementia: Handbook for Implementing Activities in an Adult Day Care Program

As the continued growth of the older adult population surges, the number of people living with dementia is expected to increase. The loss of cognitive function that results from dementia poses numerous challenges for those living with the disease and those caring for them. A solution to these challenges can be found in adult day care programs. Thus, adult day care program directors face new opportunities to expand the services they provide; however, the quality of these programs is mostly unknown due to the lack of standardization and available knowledge. Montessori for dementia care provides quality programming with meaningful person-centered activities. The implementation of a Montessori-based program for persons living with dementia has been discovered to have many benefits. However, most of the current applications have focused on the implementation of the Montessori method in long-term care communities and home settings, not in the adult day care setting.

Montessori-Based Approach for Alzheimer's and Dementia: Handbook for Implementing Activities in an Adult Day Care Program was developed based on research, observations, and feedback from expert panelists in the field of aging. The handbook's design and content introduce the Montessori method for dementia care, key principles, barriers, and challenges as well as organizational strategies, preparing the environment, and developing programs and meaningful person-centered activities. Additionally, information to support participants, staff, and family involvement is provided. The overarching goal of this handbook is to increase the utilization of adult day care services while improving the quality of life of program participants, staff, and family members.

About the Author

The author is a Master of Science in Gerontology graduate from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), and holds a bachelor’s degree in human development and a Certificate in Gerontology. Throughout her studies, she has taken courses related to the topic of this handbook, such as Aging and Dementia, Approaches to Adulthood through Aging, Culture and Aging, End of Life Issues, Global Aging, Health Assessment of the Aging Client, Leadership Skills and Strategies, Nutrition and Aging, Perspectives on Gerontology, Program Evaluation, Women and Aging, and Research Methods. The author has served as an intern at a Memory Care community, working with persons living with dementia in a residential setting. The author has also worked as the Administrator of an adult day program for persons living with Alzheimer’s and dementia where she gained firsthand experience in an adult day care setting. Furthermore, the author is a Certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional (CMDCP) as well as a Certified RCFE (Residential Care Facility for the Elderly) Administrator in California.

This handbook originated as a result of the previously mentioned educational and professional experiences and, in addition, because of personal life experiences. The author has long since been an advocate of the Montessori philosophy of teaching as she formerly worked as a Montessori teacher assistant in two Montessori school settings. More recently, over eight years, the author had the experience of being a care partner for her mother diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. It was during this time that she was first exposed to the knowledge that Dr. Cameron Camp had developed Dr. Maria Montessori’s philosophy of learning as it relates to dementia care. Based on her experiences, the author finds that this approach to providing care for a person living with dementia makes complete sense. Considering dementia care from a gerontologist’s perspective, this approach offers evidence-based, intentional, and compassionate solutions to the challenges people living with dementia face. The author is both intrigued and captivated by this area of study and holds immense value in continuing to dedicate her time to researching and advocating on the topic of Montessori for dementia care.
