Overview

Mood and anxiety disorders in women represent an increasingly important area of research and treatment development. The authors take a broad biopsychosocial and developmental approach to the issues, beginning with anxiety disorders in adolescence and progressing through the life phases of women to menopause and old age. All the disorders are covered, from anxiety and borderline personality disorder to stress and late-life depression. Particular attention is paid to questions of vulnerability; epidemiological and clinical evidence showing gender differences in such disorders; aetiological explanations in terms of biological (including hormonal) as well as psychosocial parameters, and treatment implications.

Description: The authors describe gender differences during development, both socially and physiologically, that effect mood and anxiety. The book uses extensive references to anchor its statements in relevant research.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an overview of mood and anxiety issues in women while taking into account unique complexities for this gender. This is a worthwhile objective as women comprise the largest population of medical care consumers. The book meets this objective.
Audience: From the author's perspective, this book is for women in general in addition to clinicians, biologists, pharmacologists, and other professionals interested in gender sensitive mental healthcare. The authors are credible experts.
Features: The book focuses on each developmental milestone in women's lives and the pressures during these periods that affect women's risks for anxiety and mood disorders. The authors take a balanced perspective as they evaluate both the unique physiologic and social stimuli that effect women. The effect of domestic violence is a unique and important inclusion. The book is well written and offers readers a unique perspective on gender differences in mood and anxiety.
Assessment: The authors explain in balanced terms the effects of women's physiology during adolescence as well as the specific social pressures. The effect of domestic violence is given an important analysis. The dynamic interplay between affect-anxiety-pregnancy is well analyzed, giving special attention to difficulties in medication choice during this time. Finally, the progression through menopause and into geriatrics allows discussion of special issues of this period. This is an excellent overview of our knowledge of mood and anxiety disorders in women over the life cycle.
