Description: This is the 32nd edition of a drug reference that covers 5,000 medications approved by the FDA for administration to patients. The accompanying ebook is in the same format.
Purpose: The title of the book reflects its objective. It is designed to be a reference useful in administering medications and may also be useful for advanced practitioners or PAs in prescribing.
Audience: The title of the book also indicates the target audience of nurses, but student NPs, NPs, student PAs and PAs might also use this book. The primary consultant, who is listed as the author, must rely on the other consultants for their input, particularly the PharmDs. All are credible.
Features: What is best about this book is the way the Black Box warnings are highlighted as well as other aspects of medications that might have serious side effects, interactions, or contraindications that might result in a serious untoward outcome. This unique feature is valuable in a resource like this.
Assessment: This is very similar to other drug reference guides for nurses and nursing students (Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses, 16th edition, Vallerand (F. A. Davis, 2019); Drug Information Handbook for Advanced Practice Nursing, 17th edition (Lexicomp, 2018); and Nursing 2019 Drug Handbook, 39th edition (Wolters Kluwer, 2019)). This one and Davis's stand out as the best for nursing students, but more and more nurses are using Lexicomp. The only reason for new editions is to incorporate the new medications that are approved each year.
