About the Author

Kathleen D. Pagana has been a leader in healthcare for more than 40 years, with experiences including college teaching, administration, clinical practice, business management, writing, and professional speaking. She is a Certified Speaking Professional and speaks at national and international conferences.

Timothy J. Pagana is a retired Medical Director at the Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center, Susquehanna Health System, Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Theresa Pagana is an emergency medical physician at Virtua Voorhees Hospital, Voorhees, New Jersey and an author on both the Reference and the Manual. Her role in both has increased over the editions as Tim Pagana continues to scale back his role as an author.

Description: This is the eighth edition of a book that provides up-to-date information about laboratory and diagnostic tests. This edition updates all tests and adds new studies.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a reference for diagnostic and laboratory tests. The information is presented in a concise manner and covers the laboratory test or procedure in enough detail for the user to provide quality care.
Audience: The book is primarily for use by nurses but can be used by other practitioners. The authors are a doctorally prepared nurse and a physician.
Features: Each chapter follows the same format: name of test, type of test, normal findings, possible critical values, test explanation and related physiology, contraindications, potential complications, interfering factors, procedure and patient care, and abnormal findings. The lab tests are listed in alphabetical order with minimal tables and illustrations.
Assessment: This is a good reference for practicing nurses and I would recommend using it in the case management of patients. It is a great reference for students preparing for clinicals and learning about laboratory tests and diagnostics.
