About the Author

Jim Cairo is the Dean of the School of Allied Health Professions, and Professor of Cardiopulmonary Science, Physiology and Anesthesiology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. He has been teaching for over 30 years and is also the author of Elsevier’s Pilbeam’s Mechanical Ventilation, 7e, which is publishing in Fall 2019.

Description: This text is a sixth edition, which was formally authored by Steven McPherson. The entire spectrum of respiratory care equipment is covered, from the most basic to the most sophisticated. In addition to the numerous pieces of equipment, the various respiratory therapy techniques are covered, such as diagnostic sleep studies.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of the devices and techniques used by respiratory therapists to treat patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction.
Audience: This text is primarily aimed at respiratory therapy students but could be very useful for respiratory therapists and other healthcare providers.
Features: The numerous pieces of equipment and techniques used by respiratory therapists to provide care to patients with cardiopulmonary disease are covered very well and in great detail. At the beginning of every chapter, the editors have provided an outline, key terms, and chapter objectives to help facilitate reader success in understanding the content. Each chapter has numerous illustrations and boxes to highlight the special topics and features that are being discussed. Some of the boxes contain decision making and problem solving questions aimed at improving the student's understanding of the concept being presented. This technique puts the theory presented into practice. In addition, at the end of every chapter is a set of questions to test student knowledge of the material presented. Highlights of this text include the use of various decision making and problem solving question boxes for special topics being discussed as well as Internet references. This text also incorporates respiratory therapy clinical practice guidelines, making it relevant to current practice.
Assessment: This text is a must in the field of respiratory therapy due to the rapid advancement in equipment technology. Equipment textbooks become antiquated very quickly. As a respiratory therapy educator, I feel it is vital to possess a text that reflects the most current advances in respiratory equipment technology and technique. I applaud the numerous pedagogical techniques provided here to help aid the student's success in mastering the content provided.
