About the Author

Clare Kostelnick is professor emeritus at Des Moines Area Community College where she continues to teach nursing assistant courses. She received her BSN from the Brokaw School of Nursing of Illinois Wesleyan University. She began her career as a registered nurse serving in the US Army Nurse Corps. Having achieved the rank of captain, she spent most of her military career working in emergency care. Clare's 45 years of nursing experience also includes working in critical care as a staff nurse, a home care and hospice staff nurse, a long-term care staff nurse and consultant, and a coordinator of an assisted living facility. She has taught nursing assistant classes for over 20 years. Clare is a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) instructor for the American Heart Association and is a member of the Iowa Health Educators Association.

Description: This seventh edition of a basic instructional book for long-term care nursing assistants includes updated content and procedures not part of the 2011 edition. It also includes photographs and diagrams of procedures as well as a CD that presents step-by step illustrations of procedures and different interactive methods for review.
Purpose: The author developed the book to prepare nursing assistants to work in long-term care. Certainly, this is a worthy undertaking because as the population in long-term care increases, the number of well-trained nursing assistants needs to increase. The book and the CD meet the objectives.
Audience: In general, the book is written at an appropriate level for future nursing students and their instructors. Some information may be beyond the needs of students, but serves as supportive material for instructors. For example, the book includes a listing of Nursing Diagnoses Approved by the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association International (NANDA-I).
Features: The book covers all the expected procedures and emphasizes a focus on the patient and being an accountable member of the interdisciplinary care team. An excellent feature is the use of textboxes such as "Focus on Communication," which cue caregivers on techniques to ensure that the needs of the individual are met. There are other focus textboxes that highlight working with residents with dementia, teamwork and time management, and promoting safety. The illustrations are clear and appropriate and add interest. Chapter 4 does a nice job of explaining both electronic and written documentation and communicating with the healthcare team. Chapter 5 focuses on the nursing process, but does not do an adequate job of discussing the MDS. It shows the first page of section A and one page of section G, items G0120-G0900, but does not show or discuss section G0110, the section that most needs nursing assistant input as it codes the activities of daily living.
Assessment: This is a very useful book of sound quality. It is colorful, uses varied ways to draw student attention to certain sections, and, while organized in a logical sequence, repeats points throughout the book to enhance learning. It is a good replacement of the sixth edition because the field is changing.
