Haines, a retired historian for the National Park Service who served as a ranger at Mount Rainier National Park in the 1950s, gives an account of the 19th-century conquests of the highest of the Pacific Northwest mountains, Mt. Rainier. His account of the Northern Pacific and Tacoma Eastern railways' relation to the mountain is a chronicle of ecotourism's beginnings. His discussion of the politics behind passage of park legislation is unromanticized. Includes b&w historical photos of climbers and scenery. First published in 1962 by the Oregon Historical Society.
