Mrs McLeod's War
Nell McLeod's dreams of her future as a surgeon's wife in upper class Melbourne are shattered by the guns of World War I. After two and a half ghastly years as a medic, her husband Mac returns from the trenches in France a deeply changed man. His ideas of God, empire and social class have ended with the war. Nell's personal struggles have just begun.

In the sleepy country town where Mac establishes himself, Nell must cope with quirky characters, unimaginable loss, financial anxiety, and bitter jealousy. As she struggles forward as a single mother, she must swallow regular doses of humility, and makes some eye-opening discoveries. Behind one of them lies a chance at redemption.

Mrs McLeod's War is a story of how mighty social upheaval tosses individuals into uncharted seas, and how the poison of war changes families forever. With unmitigated tragedy as a backdrop, the novel also addresses bleak boundaries of class, race, religion, and empire.

About the Author

Sally Duncan is a fifth-generation Australian native living abroad. She visits her homeland and her sprawling family as often as she can, but lives cheerfully with her husband in Oregon, USA, where her two beloved children were born, and where they’ve now all reassembled, with two grandchildren added. There’s also a farm and a selection of dogs.
Sally had her first story read aloud to her class in Grade 3. It would be cool to say she’d been writing fiction ever since, but somehow a lot of decades elapsed, during which she only took notes. Several non-fiction works appeared in the environmental field, but until now, no more stories. She has finally discovered she actually loves writing fiction. Especially historical fiction.
