In 1971 President Nixon appointed him to the United States Court of Appeals. After a decade on the federal bench, he became a partner in the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom.

William Hughes Mulligan, Jr., is a member of the law firm of Bleakley, Platt, and Schmidt, in White Plains, New York. He lives in Bronxville, New York with his wife and four children.

Mulligan's speeches cover a lot of territory, from addresses to bar associations and communion breakfasts to after-dinner speeches honoring friends and colleagues.
