The purpose of this course is to provide healthcare providers with a clear understanding of the concept of multimodal pharmacotherapy for pain relief, including available classes of analgesics. In addition, members of the public may use this course to enhance their personal knowledge of the subject matter presented.
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Describe the underlying pathophysiology of pain.
2. Outline the different types of pain.
3. Discuss the mechanism of action and clinical use of opioids in the management of pain.
4. Compare and contrast other analgesic agents that can be used in a multimodal approach to pain management, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antidepressants, and local anesthetics.
5. Analyze approaches to multimodal pharmacotherapy for pain management.
