Description: This is an excellent overview and reference for clinical musculoskeletal and sports medicine. The book covers both common, high-yield topics as well as less commonly encountered but still important differentials to consider. The main content of the book is organized by anatomic region and the information is presented primarily in bullet point format. The book also contains many helpful illustrations and images. A number of flowcharts and tables in each chapter provide a quick overview of a variety of topics as well as basic diagnostic algorithms to consider when evaluating and treating a patient.
Purpose: The main purpose, according to the author, is to provide insights into the clinical diagnostic and decision-making process when assessing and treating patients with musculoskeletal complaints, which is identified as a relative gap in the literature. This is a worthy area in which to provide additional publications, and the book lives up to its goals. The discussions and the illustrations and charts work together to break concepts down into organized, logical approaches to the conditions.
Audience: This book is intended to serve a wide variety of readers who encounter patients with musculoskeletal complaints in clinic and may come from many different specialties/subspecialties including physiatry, sports medicine, primary care, orthopedics, and rheumatology. The book is appropriate for readers from varying backgrounds, and it is also accessible to readers of varying levels of training, ranging from residents to attending physicians. The book provides enough detail to be a helpful reference for more experienced clinicians who encounter a diagnosis or complaint with which they are less familiar, while simultaneously remaining concise enough not to overwhelm readers with less experience. The author, board certified in both physical medicine and rehabilitation and sports medicine, is fellowship director of a sports medicine program at a major academic medical center.
Features: This thorough overview of musculoskeletal medicine is organized anatomically from head to toe. Each chapter corresponds to a body region and includes a comprehensive discussion of anatomy and biomechanics that provides helpful background for the remainder of the chapter. These sections represent a nice discussion of topics that are often omitted or glossed over in some other works. Chapters include broad differential diagnoses for each body region, often with helpful flowcharts and tables to assist with clinical reasoning, and diagnostic algorithms to consider when working up and treating patients. Sections on physical exam, diagnostic studies, and general treatment principles are also included. Finally, there is an overview of the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment for the conditions listed in the differential. Some of the less-common diagnoses are discussed in a little more detail in this book than in some other, similar books, which is a nice feature, although further reading may be needed on some topics (but a comprehensive reference list at the end of each chapter is a helpful place to start). Each chapter also contains multiple illustrations, which are outstanding in their clarity and didactic value. A few of the illustrations may benefit from the addition of accent colors (illustrations are in grayscale only), but, overall, they are a strength of the book. The inclusion of ultrasound images is also a valuable addition to some sections, particularly given the ever-increasing role that ultrasound is playing in musculoskeletal medicine. Unfortunately, I was unable to access the online features, which appears to be a problem with the application used to provide the online content. It is noted that an ebook version is included, which is always a nice option, and the prospect of an image bank with additional surface anatomy and ultrasound images is appealing.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent overview of musculoskeletal medicine that is accessible and useful to clinicians who come from a variety of training backgrounds and who are at various levels of training. The attempt to provide a logical approach to the clinical reasoning and decision making process in musculoskeletal medicine is successful — the book provides enough detail to be helpful to more experienced clinicians who consult it with a specific question, while remaining broad enough and concise enough not to be overwhelming to less experienced clinicians or trainees, the latter of whom will find it to be a helpful resource and tool as they delve deeper into musculoskeletal medicine. The text is augmented by multiple outstanding illustrations as well as helpful flowcharts and tables that provide nice organization to the book and allow for quick reference of many topics. The book entertains a more complete discussion of anatomy and biomechanics, as well as more comprehensive discussions of some less common items on the musculoskeletal differential, than is seen is some other, similar books, which helps this one stand out. Overall, this is a worthwhile book to review and a great reference to have on hand for anyone who will be working up and treating patients with musculoskeletal conditions regularly, or for anyone who is looking to improve their approach to diagnosing and treating these issues.
