This book provides an excellent foundation by going beyond pathology and concentrating on these fundamentals. Basic physics and artifact recognition and prevention are outlined. Chapters review essential anatomy and include images and tables that highlight relevant bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Sites of attachment and the best positions for examination are also noted. Technique is presented via a three-tiered approach and photographs of patients in the transducer position are matched with the resulting ultrasound images and complementary anatomical overlays.

About the Author

John O’Neill, MD, is the musculoskeletal fellowship director and an assistant professor at St. Joseph’s Healthcare/McMaster University in Ontario. Dr. O’Neill earned his medical degree at University Cork College and a degree in clinical imaging at the University of Edinburgh. He completed musculoskeletal fellowships at McMaster University and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. O’Neill has served on national guideline committees for the Canadian Association of Radiologists and has presented at the American Roentgen Ray Society. His papers have appeared in journals such as Clinical Radiology and CardioVascular & Interventional Radiology.

Description: This is a thorough anatomy atlas that pairs photos of correct transducer placement on the patient with correlative representative ultrasound images and explains the positions in which the patient should be examined. Multiple anatomy illustrations and tables throughout the book demonstrate not only muscle/tendon origins and insertions, but also the physiologic actions of each muscle.
Purpose: The purpose is to address the normal ultrasound appearance of the musculoskeletal system without specifically delving into the multitude of pathologic conditions that can affect the musculoskeletal system and their ultrasound appearance. The authors also focus on teaching correct positioning of the patient and correct transducer placement to encourage a thorough, diagnostic exam.
Audience: Although it can be used by a wide variety of clinicians, the book seems particularly relevant for musculoskeletal radiologists, ultrasonographers, radiology residents and fellows, rheumatologists, orthopedists, sports medicine physicians, and physical medicine/rehabilitation physicians. The author obviously has vast practical experience with musculoskeletal ultrasound.
Features: The book fully covers the ultrasound appearance of the joints in the upper and lower extremities and instructs readers on proper positioning of the patient to ensure a complete exam. There are also chapters on the imaging of peripheral nerves and the brachial plexus, material which is new to me and which I have not seen covered elsewhere. The book is loaded with high quality ultrasound images, photos of transducer placement and patient positioning, and color illustrations of musculoskeletal anatomy which all contribute to the uniqueness of this book. I really liked the "Insider Information" boxes which offer pearls and practical tips on potential pitfalls. While I recognize that this book is not intended to demonstrate pathology, a few representative ultrasound pictures demonstrating pathology would enhance the next edition (i.e. the appearance of an abnormal tendon alongside an image of a normal tendon).
Assessment: This is an excellent reference with high quality illustrations and photos that will be effective in teaching the ultrasound anatomy of the musculoskeletal system and performance of a comprehensive ultrasound exam of any joint in the body.
