About the Author

Kathryn Cole has spent a forty-five-year career in children’s books as an illustrator, art director, editor, designer, and publisher at Scholastic, OUP, Stoddart Kids and Tundra Books. The books she has overseen have won multiple awards, including four Governor General’s Awards. Kathryn volunteered as a support to parents for thirteen years with Boost in their crisis support and court preparation groups. She is co-managing editor at Second Story Press and lives in Toronto.

Cornelia Li is an award-winning illustrator and storyteller whose work has been featured in The New Yorker and Reader's Digest. She lives and works in Toronto with her cockatoo, Charlie, who's her professional paper shredder.

This simple yet effective board book employs a rhythmic structure to illustrate—and celebrate—a fluid, inclusive model of family, centering families whose parental roles are unshared, shared over distance, multigenerational, or otherwise “untraditional.” In straightforward language (“My family/ Your family”), Cole references a multitude of family types: “Their family,” reads one verso page, featuring an androgynous parent; “Shared family,” reads the recto, showing one parent waving to a child who is off to stay with another guardian. Li’s vibrantly colored illustrations portray characters of varying skin tones, religions, and abilities. A solid introduction to inclusive family structures. Ages up to 2. (Sept.)
