About the Author

Born in Valley Forge and raised in a Philadelphia rowhouse on Race Street, the author is a professor and chair of the English department at Temple University, where he teaches courses on African-American culture and American society. He is the author of three cultural studies: Smooth Operating and Other Social Acts, Black Male Frames, and African American Autobiography and the Quest for Freedom. In addition, he has published fiction and poetry inspired by his life in the city.
