Description: Colorful with great illustrations, this book covers the basics of mental health for LPN/LVN students. Each chapter includes tips, case studies, and multiple-choice questions to test student knowledge. The fourth edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The authors identify the goal of the book as providing basic information about mental health theories, personality development, coping and communication styles, psychiatric diagnoses, psychosocial reactions, and nursing actions as they pertain to the practice of the LPN/LVN. These are worthy objectives and well explicated in the book.
Audience: The audience is LPN/LVN students. The book is written at the proper level and would meet the needs of students during their psychiatric rotation. Based upon her credentials, the first author is an expert in the field of psychiatric nursing.
Features: Each chapter is laid out in the same way, making it very easy to navigate. The NCLEX-type questions, toolbox, tips, and pharmacology corner are also helpful for student learning and retention. Two areas that appear to be missing from the book are a discussion of bullying (including cyberbullying) in the abuse chapter and some mention of nonsuicidal self-injury in the child/adolescent chapter.
Assessment: This update is justified as the last edition was published before the DSM-5 was released. The book is small, compact, attractive, and easy to read, and it certainly will be useful to LPN/LVN students.
