Purpose: The purpose is to summarize and synthesize knowledge of the basic features of the development and transmission of parasitic nematodes of vertebrates and to place them in their modern classifications. The author also tries to place information in an historical content and provide numerous primary literature sources. These are worthy objectives in order to create a text of factual scientific information for the researcher of parasitic nematodes, and the stated objectives are met.
Audience: The targeted audience is the researcher of nematode parasites of animals, as well as their students. The author is very well published in several areas of the parasitic nematodes and would seem to be a credible authority for the subject.
Features: This book seems to be a fairly inclusive attempt by the author to summarize the current knowledge of development and transmission of all the parasitic nematodes of vertebrates. The literature cited in the text is certainly thorough, if not exhaustive. Several well constructed diagrams of lifecycles and worm developmental structures are provided. There are a few typographical errors, but they do not distract from the intent.
Assessment: This book should be useful for zoologists, wildlife biologists, researchers, and students in the study and investigation of parasitic nematodes as it includes a vast array of species that infect the vertebrate host. Several texts exist that are of medical importance in the practice of human and veterinary medicine. This text, however, is a good attempt to include all the parasitic nematodes of vertebrates, encompassing the latest concepts, nomenclature, and relationships. In this second edition the author updates nomenclature, includes additional species, and provides new observations.
