New Russian-English Dictionary
This thoroughly tested reference work provides an unusually comprehensive guide to the reading, speaking, and writing of Russian for both advanced and beginning students. Using the new orthography, it is most useful for literary, scientific, political, and commercial translation.
Over 70,000 entries are provided in the orthography, with full information on accentuation and grammatical classifications. All important shades of meaning are given under each word, with many idiomatic uses and colloquialisms. Irregular verbs are listed in tables for both languages, while individual entries indicate stems, transitiveness, perfective and imperfective aspects, conjugation, and both regular and irregular sounds changes. Genders, sound changes, irregularities, plurals are indicated for nouns, while irregular adjectives are given in both positive and comparative forms. Prepositional entries indicate cases governed. This is one of the very few dictionaries where accent changes within the conjugation of verbs and the declension of nouns are fully indicated.
Other features include pronunciation instruction, translations of first names and geographical terms. English words are provided with Russian phonetic transcriptions. A conversion table analyzes older Russian nonmetric weights and measurements, while a bibliography lists more specialized Russian-English dictionaries.
"One of the best for … students, … extensive grammatical aids present an advantage not shared by any other such dictionary." — Professor E. J. Simmons, Cornell University.

PREFACE

This dictionary has been designed to supply the long-felt want of a cheap, handy and thoroughly up-to-date Dictionary of the English and Russian languages.

No effort has been spared to make this work a compendious dictionary of handy size, dealing a. completely as. possible with the words and phrases of both the written and spoken language of the present time. Special attention has been paid to the following points:

1. The inclusion of all recent words which have gained currency in commerce, science and sport.

2. The inclusion of obsolete words, provincialisms, Americanisms and colloquial expressions which the reader may come across in novels or newspapers or in commercial use.

3. Special attention has been devoted to synonyms. In these cases catchwords in brackets indicate the various shades of meaning; cf. for example under Shift, Business.

4. The pronunciation of every English word is indicated by means of a very simple but thoroughly scientific system of phonetic transcription.

5. In both parts very full grammatical details are given, so. that the inflection of any word, and in the Russian-English part changes in the accentuation can be seen at a glance.

6. In both parts the accentuation of every Russian word is indicated.

7. In both parts the Perfective and Imperfective Aspects of every Russian verb have been given.

8. As regards Spelling; for English that of the Oxford Standard Dictionary has been adopted. For Russian the new official Orthography has been used.

In the preparation of this work constant recourse has had to be made to the standard works of lexicographers in both languages. The author gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to the following works: Pawlowsky: Deutsch-Russisches und Russisch-Deutsches Wörterbuch; Dalj: [TEXT NOT REPRODUCIBLE IN ASCII]; Karl Blattner: Taschenwörterbuch der russi-schen Sprache (Langenscheidt); Koiransky: Deutsch-Russisches und Russisch-Deutsches Taschenwörterbuch (Tauchnitz); The Concise Oxford Dictionary.
